Macrostax Nutrition Tracking Guide: Applying ADDIE and SAM

Project type

Instructional Design

Date

Fall 2024

Location

Utah State University

Challenge/Problem:
Users of Macrostax, a nutrition tracking app, often struggle with accurately inputting their meals and understanding macronutrient breakdowns, particularly those who are new to nutrition tracking or lack prior knowledge of macronutrients.

Instructional Design Approach:
This project followed the ADDIE model, guiding the systematic creation of the How-To Guide:

Analysis: Identified user challenges through empathy mapping and task analysis, focusing on novice users’ difficulties with meal input, data interpretation, and error correction.
Design: Outlined clear, step-by-step instructions using a structured task analysis, incorporating visual aids, error-checking tips, and simplified terminology for accessibility.
Development: Constructed the guide using a modular format to address each step of the input process, accompanied by annotated screenshots and troubleshooting tips.
Implementation: The guide was tested with a representative target audience member, Ben, to gauge clarity, user flow, and effectiveness in reducing meal input errors.
Evaluation: Collected feedback from Ben to assess the guide’s usability and iterated on areas of confusion, particularly with error correction and understanding macro breakdowns.

Additionally, the project incorporated elements of the SAM (Successive Approximation Model), allowing for iterative testing and revision throughout the development phase. Observations and feedback from Ben prompted immediate updates to the guide, ensuring it remained user-centric and effectively addressed common user pain points.

Task Analysis:
The primary task was to observe how a user, specifically the target audience member Ben, navigates the planner screen to input a meal. Ben, a novice user with limited nutrition tracking experience, was asked to log a breakfast of eggs and milk. Key observations included confusion over double entries due to delayed app feedback and uncertainty about logging body fat measurements.

Goals/Objectives:
1. Identify potential friction points in the meal input process.
2. Provide clear, step-by-step instructions for logging meals effectively.
3. Include troubleshooting tips for common errors such as double entries.
4. Ensure instructions are accessible for users of all knowledge levels.

Solution:
A comprehensive How-To Guide was developed, focusing on the most frequently used feature – the planner screen. The guide includes step-by-step instructions with visual aids for each step, including searching for food items, utilizing the barcode scanner, and correcting input errors.

Deliverable:
The deliverable was a visually guided How-To Guide designed to support new users in effectively logging meals in Macrostax. The guide includes screenshots, instructional text, and troubleshooting tips to mitigate common user errors.

Impact:
The guide was tested with Ben, whose feedback indicated improved confidence in using the app and greater awareness of how to input meals correctly without redundant entries. The inclusion of error-checking steps helped mitigate potential frustration, fostering a more intuitive user experience.

Reflection:
Applying the ADDIE model ensured a structured approach, while SAM’s iterative nature facilitated immediate feedback implementation, resulting in a more user-centric deliverable. This combination of models reinforced the importance of integrating both structured and agile approaches in instructional design, particularly when developing user-facing documentation.
